Topeka is the capital city of the U.S. state of Kansas and the county seat of Shawnee County, which is named after the Shawnee Indians. In 1900, 33,608 people lived in Topeka; in 1910, 43,684; in 1920, 50,022; and in 1940, 67,833. According to Census 2000, the population is 122,377.
