The Westport Branch Library was originally called the Allen Library for its owner, Judge A. M. Allen, and opened in 1898. When Kansas City and Westport consolidated, the Allen Library became the first branch of the public library. It is the oldest library in the metropolitan area, and was built with leftover money from a streetcar line. In 1998-1999 Westport Branch underwent major renovation and reopened in Spring of 1999 in time to begin its second century of service to the community.
